Conservative treatment … the first step in most cases

In most children, conservative treatment is the first step, especially during the first year of life, because a large percentage of nasolacrimal duct obstruction cases improve automatically over time.

Conservative treatment includes:

Massaging the tear duct in the correct manner.
Treating inflammation when present.
Regular follow-up with an eye doctor.

The goal of massaging the tear duct is to increase the pressure inside the lacrimal system, which may help open the thin membrane responsible for the blockage in some children.

However, it is essential to know that the success of massage does not depend only on its frequency, but also on the correct method of performing it. Therefore, the eye doctor should explain to the parents how to perform the massage correctly, rather than just advising them to do it.

Also, conservative treatment does not replace follow-up, as the persistence of symptoms or recurrence of inflammation may necessitate transitioning to other treatment options in a timely manner.
