A day for children who deserve a better chance

Endoscopic surgery ends the suffering of 10 children from tear duct obstruction

A medical team at the Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Muatasim Al-Attiyah, Director of the Northern Badia Hospital and endoscopic nasal and skull base surgeon, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Shatnawi, a specialist in oculoplastic surgery and reconstruction of the eyes, eyelids, and lacrimal canaliculi, successfully performed high-quality endoscopic procedures to implant lacrimal stents in 10 children from various governorates of the Kingdom.

The medical team stated that the procedures, which they described as high-quality and took 12 continuous hours to complete, were performed at Zarqa Government Hospital, in cooperation with oculoplastic and endoscopic nasal surgery specialists.

They noted that the procedures were performed on children from the Northern Badia, Azraq, Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa, pointing out that the children suffered from complex cases of tear duct obstruction, most of which affected both eyes, requiring precise surgical intervention using endoscopic lacrimal stent implantation technology, which was introduced by the Ministry of Health to improve treatment outcomes in such cases.

The medical team explained that the procedures involved logistical, field, technical, and medical arrangements before, during, and after the operations, carried out by a number of medical staff, including Dr. Awad Muhammad Al-Khazaaleh, Director of Zarqa Government Hospital, and anesthesia and nursing teams.

According to the team, the procedures included cases that required special care and had disabilities, noting that among these cases were children with Down syndrome, children with congenital anomalies of the lacrimal canaliculi, and others with high anesthesia risks or chronic inflammation of the lacrimal sac, making these procedures more complex and sensitive, requiring precise handling, where the medical team used different types of stents according to the health condition of each child and the needs of each eye, reflecting the development of specialized surgical services in the Ministry of Health and the keenness to provide the latest therapeutic technologies for children within the Kingdom.
